A fine portrait drawing of a young attractive dark-haired woman with a pink ribbon in her hair, 14" by 10 1/2" (25" by 20 1/2"in quality framing), signed with symbol and also in capital letters at lower right, by listed California artist OTIS WILLIAMS (1888-1960). This attractive work, deftly executed on gray paper, is obviously by a skilled and trained hand. Williams was born in Missouri and was in Los Angeles with his family by age four. He studied art locally for a time but then went to New York for training at the Art Students League and the Beaux Arts Institute. Robert Henri and George Bellows influenced the young artist. By 1915 he was back in Los Angeles painting landscapes and portraits. A member of the California Art Club and Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, he is considered today a member of the "California Scene" painters. This drawing is in excellent condition; I do note an unexplained sort of vertical darkness in a strip at left. It is only visible when viewed from a certain angle (see final image). At first I thought it might be subtle shadowing from a fold but that is not the case, so this remains unexplained. The drawing is beautifully understated, and subtle. Someone spent a good amount of money on the quality framing, which is very tastefully done. Allow for reflections in a few images.
