Large (30 1/2" by 41", in metal strip frame) monumental charcoal drawing of a black man grimacing and screaming in apparent Angst as he pulls on a costume party-like mask, signed at middle left in the field, by the noted late contemporary African-American artist JON ONYE LOCKARD (1932-2015). There seems to be a deep and symbolic origin to the man's intense emotions; the artist has written in years, as if on calendar pages, from the 1730's (left, around the head) through the late 1800's (right, along the top of the muscular arm) through the 1900's (as late as 1977, at lower right---possibly the date of execution of the work?); and the artist wrote "If I Were Jehovah" at lower right. The artist's birth date of 1932 is written larger than the other dates. One wonders if there is some commentary on slavery and its place in the African-American experience. The work came from a Los Angeles home that was a virtual repository of works by the artist (a number of which I have also listed in my shop). Lockard was born in Detroit during the Great Depression. He graduated from Wayne State University in 1955 and went on to be a traveling portraitist for a time in the late fifties and early sixties. In the mid sixties he met the noted African-American artist John Biggers in Houston. Lockard went on to develop his natural talents, receiving national acclaim, as his mural work appeared at Wayne State, the University of Michigan, and Central State University, and the Charles Wright Museum of African-American Art. For forty years he was an instructor at the University of Michigan, inspiring countless students. Lockard passed away in 2015. A market for his art has not yet developed, but over time that situation should self-correct. Compare to drawings by the likes of Charles White. See Lockard's impressive online footprint, and the other Lockard works in my shop, (pastel drawings, and a single oil). Due to size/weight considerations, the non-glare glass should be removed before shipping.
