Watercolor and ink drawing, 4" by 5 7/8" inside the innermost of three mats (9 1/2" by 11 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left and inscribed "STUDY" by artist DAVE POWELL (born 1954), son of noted deceased Western American artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell. This is a skillfully executed drawing. The caricature of an early 19th century Mountain Man in fringed clothing fighting a bear with his flintlock pistol is almost comical. On reverse backing it is signed and titled "Grizzly Attack", probably in the artist's hand. Powell, son of two Montana art legends and elected himself to the Cowboy Artists of America in 2004, is listed in the landmark 1982 Samuels book on contemporary western artists. This is a clean work and is ready for the wall.
