Old watercolor painting of ducks under a tree by the side of a lake or river, 11 3/4" by 18" ( 25" by 31 3/4" framed), signed at lower left by artist CONSTANT ARTZ (1870-1951). The poetic work dhows the birds taking refuge under a tree as a storm is perhaps approaching. Indeed, written in old hand on the backing is "The Storm" (probably not by the artist himself). The sky looks grayish and overcast and the leaves appear to be moving in a stiff breeze. Artz was the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890). The father was a student of the great Jozef Israels and familiar with the Hague School artists. The son studied at the Hague Academy. He particularly liked depicting ducks, in both oils and watercolor, and it is for this subject matter that he is known today. This watercolor is in fresh, excellent condition from a Spokane area estate. The frame is later, and has some wear.
