A nicely painted landscape of willowy pine trees along a large peaceful lake on a fair weather day, 18" by 20" oil on canvas (24 1/4" by 26 3/4" in original silvery frame with Art Deco flavor) by artist JACOB HORAK. The work does not appear to be signed but there are two remaining old labels on the frame, one showing that this work, titled "Moment of Solitude", was exhibited in 1938 at the Twentieth Annual Exhibition of the Work of Toledo Artists; and another, from 1940, showing it was exhibited apparently again, at "Art Week". The artist's address of Tiffin, Ohio is included on both. Tiffin is in northern Ohio about 55 miles southeast of Toledo. An online search reveals 1930 census information on the artist giving his birthplace as Czechoslovakia and his age at about 38, so he would have been born in the early 1890's. More online searching shows a Jacob Horak who was born in 1891 and died in 1965, buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale, CA. The painting was found in Richland in southeast Washington State. This could well be all the same individual. Technically he does not appear to be a "listed" artist currently, but clearly was skilled enough to be known. The painting has been behind glass all these years (which remains). For safe shipping the glass will be removed. The frame has some wear----digs in the wood from exposure to nails on other paintings, perhaps.
