Acrylic on board painting of interesting abstract forms, titled on reverse "Mystic Rite", signed at lower left by noted longtime Seattle area painter, printmaker, sculptor, and illustrator, RICHARD CHARLES KIRSTEN (DAIENSAI). The painting measures 14" by 9 1/2" (23" by 16 3/4" in mid century looking framing including burlap type area between inner and outer frame borders. There is a reverse label likely in the hand of the artist, giving his name, address at the time, the title/medium, $65 original price, and, in Chinese characters, the date of its creation: April 1965. Kirsten was born in Chicago and for most of his life was associated with the Seattle area. He spent much time in Japan and Korea, which nourished the intense Buddhist spirituality which largely governed his artistic output. Kirsten's works are commonly encountered in the Pacific Northwest. The strange forms seen in this painting bear similarities to those in the surrealistic works of artists like Yves Tanguy or Salvador Dali. This would make a fine addition to your mid century interior.
