Watercolor on paper painting of the the pyramids of Giza, including graceful date palms towering over a neighboring oasis village. A camel, a donkey and several small figures complete the picturesque scene, which is signed at lower left by listed artist DAVID VASSILIOU. Vassiliou's biography is not extensive but he was evidently a prolific painter at mid century, most works featuring Egypt, Greece and the Mediterranean region. He seems to have most often signed with a distinctive capital "W" for some reason; works signed with the full name as seen here seem to be more rarely encountered. This work measures 7 3/4" by 12" (15" by 20 1/2" in the framing). Condition is excellent, the work being very fresh, save for slight wear to the frame. See a second, larger work by the artist in my shop. Allow for a few reflections in the sky area.
