An impressive oil on canvasboard landscape painting with great impasto and energy, signed at lower left corner by the well listed Lithuanian artist JADVYGA DOBKEVICIUTE PAUKSTIENE (1913-2005). Paukstiene's works are auctioned in Lithuania, where she is considered a major national artist. Born in Latvia, she was educated at the Kaunas School of Art in Lithuania, studying under Petras Kalpokas in 1938. After that she studied in Paris at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, winning a gold medal in 1937. During the difficult war year of 1942 she participated in a significant exhibition, and in 1944 moved to Germany. After the war she appeared in Chicago, where she became a member of the Lithuanian Artists Union. In the latter part of her life in the USA she was a respected teacher. This oil measures 22" by 30" (28" by 35" as framed). There is a title on the reverse and also some writing in Lithuanian on a fragmentary label still adhering to the frame.
