For the collector of rare, and desirable early Florida art: a watercolor painting titled in pencil lower left "Old Spanish House/St. Augustine", dated 1881, apparently not signed. The work, paper laid on a board, measures 9 3/4" by 13 3/4". An early 20th century 13 1/2" by 17 1/2" frame (not shown) accompanies the watercolor. On the reverse side of the board in modern times someone wrote "Attributed to William Turner Dannat" but this is highly unlikely. There were few talented watercolor artists in the 1880's in St. Augustine; Frank Henry Shapleigh comes to mind most immediately, and Martin Johnson Heade was also painting landscape and still life oils there. The Florida works of both of those artists have brought into six figures---Heade's, to five million for an exceptional oil. Stylistically this does not resemble the work of either Shapleigh or Heade. The identity of the artist will most likely remain a mystery. Condition is good other than the condition of being laid down.
