A exhibition poster, "FIFTEEN ANNUAL ARTISTS' SALUTE TO BLACK HISTORY MONTH 'CELEBRATING THE LEGENDS", signed in pencil at lower right and dated there '97, and hand titled in pencil "Cleo", by SAMELLA LEWIS (1924-), the noted African-American artist, collector, critic and art historian. The poster in black and white measures a trim 21" by 17" in simple wood frame (shipped without glass).. Lewis needs little introduction to collectors of black art. Born in Louisiana, she was instructed by Elizabeth Catlett at Dillard University. Later she received advanced education at Hampton Institute in Virginia and at Ohio State and Florida A&M, earning Masters and Ph.D. degrees---the first black woman nationally to receive advanced degrees in fine art and art history. Lewis has been a presence in the African-American art scene for many decades, promoting black art in many ways---publishing, museum opening, educating. At 93 she remains a respected icon in the field of African-American art and culture.
