Oil on board painting in a fully impressionist hand, 26 1/2" by 21 1/2" (35" by 29 1/2" in old, vintage probably original frame), signed lower left and incised on the old soft board on reverse "Pines at Carmel". This lovely impressive work is by listed California artist IDA MAYNARD CURTIS (1860-1959). Curtis was born in Pennsylvania before the outbreak of the Civil War. She studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne, and with Ross, Menard and Simon in Paris. Upon return to the United States she attended the Art Students League in New York and Cornell University. Curtis lived in Boston until 1921, at which time she moved to Carmel, California, remaining there until her death at age 98. Curtis painted landscapes, coastal scenes and deserts. For many years she was a member of various art clubs and associations, including the Carmel Art Association and Carmel Art Club. This work projects a silvery light which reminds of the foggy days in and around the Monterey/Carmel area of California's Central Coast. The frame is attractive and adds to the presentation; it has a little wear which could stand touch up and repair **including new wear sustained in shipping, not shown in these photos**.
