Brown chalk drawing of a mother and child, 11 1/2" by 7" (14 1/2" by 10" framed) signed at lower right by artist MAXIM BUGZESTER (1910-1978). The artist was born in Stanislov, Poland (present day Ukraine) to Ruthenian-Jewish parents. He grew up in Vienna and began an art education there. Bugzester became a student of the important German expressionist artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976). While still young, he spent time in France, where he worked for a time with Pierre Bonnard and Georges Braque, who became good friends. After 1935 the artist was in the United States, and he died in New York in 1978. Bugzester's oil paintings tend to be brightly colored.
