Scarce lithograph of two women in a garden, 23" by 14 1/4" (31 1/2" by 23" framed), executed in sunny colors in an impressionist manner, pencil signed at lower right by the artist, famous Vietnamese-French painter LE PHO (1907-2001), numbered at lower left margin 38/120". The print is in excellent condition. The print retains on the backing paper a Saint Paul, MN framer's label. Le Pho's paintings have brought as high as $800,000, more commonly in the tens and low hundreds of thousands, at major Hong Kong auctions. His impressionist style and popular subject matter are popular with today's buyers. The artist went to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1932, at a time when such travel was not nearly as easy or common as it is today. After a brief return to Vietnam where he taught for a time in Hanoi, he returned to Paris, where he remained the rest of his life. He lived to a great age and was able to witness at the end of his life the popularity of his work (which has since exploded in price exponentially). For a time, I believe the artist was promoted by Wally Findlay Galleries in the United States, increasing his exposure and popularity there. Le Pho is certainly considered to be among the most important modern painters of Southeast Asia.
