Oil on canvas mountain landscape painting, 27 1/2" by 36 3/4" (33 1/2" by 42" framed), signed at lower right by listed eastern German artist KARL-ERICH SCHAFER (1905-1982). This is a poetic scene with small figures going about their lives in a beautiful Alpine valley surrounded by high peaks. Note the gentleman's distinctive hat. Schafer was born in Dresden, Germany and died there, but there seems to be fairly little biographical information available. He studied in the 1920's at the Kunstakademie Dresden, in 1930-31 in Paris, and was a teacher in the 1960's. A handful of works have come to auction, including landscapes, still life, and portrait. The painting is in stable and presentable condition, with craquelure pattern visible mostly in the blue sky.
