A striking semi-abstract painting in bright color, signed at lower left and dated there 1988, by Armenian contemporary artist ARMEN KHOJOYAN (also spelled KHOJOIAN), born 1959. This oil on heavy canvas is an earlier work by an artist well known in Armenia. Khojoyan was a graduate of Yerevan State Institute of Fine and Dramatic Arts, where he received his masters in painting in 1987. Information on the internet indicates that the artist's style has changed somewhat, to a preponderance of collage works incorporating metals, wood, leather and gem stones. This painting is unframed, and measures 24" by 38". There is a roughly 1" by 3/4" chip of missing paint under one of the back legs of the stylized animal at right center. Written in Armenian on the reverse presumably by the artist is "Painting #14". A very modern painting that once framed will be even more striking. The skill of the artist is obvious. A special thanks to my Armenian-American friend Levon for his kind translation of a language with which I am not at all familiar.
