Painting in oil or mixed media (some gouache possibly) on panel, the subject an Ainu woman (indigenous peoples most closely associated with the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido but also with ethnic ties to far eastern Russia), 11 3/4" by 9" (16 1/2" by 13 3/4" with framing remains), signed at lower right with initials PNG and dated there 1958. The work is nicely executed but the identity of the artist remains a mystery. I suspect the artist is American. There is a Great Neck, New York label on reverse and this was found in Salem, Massachusetts. The work needs to be properly framed, as the photos clearly demonstrate.
