A beautifully painted oil on canvas work, 16" by 20" (24" by 27 3/4" framed), signed at lower right by listed artist EARL TARR (1921-1982), and aptly named---it is titled on the stretcher "Shadow Mountain", and signed again by the artist there. The painting's style reminds of Sam Hyde Harris, or Frederick R. Chisnall, with whose work Tarr must have been familiar. There seems to be little biographical information on Tarr other than what appears in the brief askart biography: that he was born in Los Angeles County, exhibited at the San Fernando Valley Art Club in the 1940's, that he was the son of a well-known physician, Earl Mendrum Tarr (1889-1972), and that he passed away in Orange County in 1982. The present frame I believe, though original no doubt, does not flatter the painting. A gold, plein-air style frame, or even a silvery one, would enhance the presentation greatly. Overall a very attractive painting of the California desert.
