A large felt tip marker drawing of a fetching nude woman pictured against a patterned background, 29" by 19 1/2" inside the linen liner, signed at lower right and dated there 1960 by the noted Romanian-born American film director, and talented artist, JEAN NEGULESCO (1900-1993). The line drawing (in the style for which Negulesco is known) has the feeling of Matisse. The drawing was part of the extensive collection of famous West Coast interior designer TONY DUQUETTE (1914-1999), and was sold as lot 543 in the eagerly anticipated, well-attended sale of that collection at Christie's Los Angeles in March of 2001. The original Christie's sticker is affixed at lower right corner. Duquette was internationally known as a costume and set designer, in addition to his interior design skills; he was very connected to Hollywood society for decades. The entire work as framed measures a hefty 43 1/2" by 32 1/2". The black wood strip frame, undoubtedly the original, is quite worn, and the orange mid-century linen has become soiled with moisture and dirt perhaps while in storage. The buyer might wish to re-frame. Shipping estimate is based on the dimensions of the drawing only (which could possibly be rolled in a tube, if not laid down). The drawing might show some fading from ultraviolet light, and the edges show a bit of rumpling but the condition is essentially sound.
