A small ink and watercolor drawing of Pan (a mythological god of the outdoors, hunting etc., often portrayed as half human, half goat) playing his flute to three dancing rabbits in a meadow, signed at lower right by artist "Bennett". The work measures 4 3/4" by 6" (8 1/2" by 10" framed). Certainly this is by a talented hand. The name being common, I have not been able to determine exactly who the artist might have been. The pointy-eared boy-goat looks familiar, as do the rabbits. This takes us into Beatrix Potter or similar territory. Condition is excellent; opening this up I pried this carefully from a mat. The drawing area that was inside the mat window has browned from air exposure. Under the drawing in the large margins are framer's notes only--no other information. There is an old fragmentary label on the old backing, of a New York City picture framer. Found in New Hampshire.
