An oil on canvas painting of an older priest or monk eavesdropping on the conversation of a pair of younger men of the cloth in a richly-appointed, classic interior (library or study), signed by artist at lower left "M. Klein Wylock". This detailed, finely painted work dates to the late 20th century, but the artist was clearly familiar with the similar works of the late 19th century by German, French and Italian artists working in the manner of Eduard von Grutzner (1846-1925). The facial expressions, clothing, globe at left, drapes, carpet, books and other details of the interior are very well handled. The painting is in excellent condition with just a few very small paint losses (one in the carpet). Frame has some chipping to corners and some other small losses. I have searched for an artist by this name and to date have not been able to match the name with a known painter. The work measures 16" by 20" and 22 1/2" by 26" in the gold frame, which in itself is quite attractive. More photos upon request.
