***One of two very similar works by the artist in my shop, that should truly be kept together as a pair (see item JB0437)***Oil on canvas 19th century landscape with gnarled old tree, fence and birds, 15 3/4" by 12 3/4" (19 1/2" by 16 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left by well listed artist PIERRE LOUIS JOSEPH DE CONINCK (1828-1910). This French artist's works appear with some regularity at European auctions, the more important examples in the past having brought to over $30,000. This is a painting with great draftsmanship and subtle use of muted color. De Coninck was born in Meteren in extreme northern France near the Belgian border, between Lille and Dunkirk/Calais. He apprenticed locally and then in 1850 went to Paris, where he worked in the atelier of Jules Coignet and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1859 the artist won the Prix de Rome, and in 1863 Napoleon III commissioned from him a work for the Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church.
