ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 6 1/8" by 4 1/2", respectably matted but not framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "Temple Emanu El /S.F." and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The temple is a San Francisco landmark, the home of one of the oldest Jewish congregations in California, its heritage going back to the Gold Rush. The temple with its impressive 150 foot high dome is located in the Presidio Heights portion of the city. Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth. Art education in the Bay Area followed, in the late 1920's, and by 1932 she was producing etchings, generally of familiar Bay Area scenes. She worked until at least the 1970's, when she moved to Pacific Grove near Carmel. These small etchings proved popular with visitors to San Francisco, who kept them as souvenirs, as they are now often found in places distant from California. The print is very clean, I note a slightly torn edge to the card at lower left, not visible except when viewed without a mat, and the defect could date to the time of printing. It is taped to the backing at top edges, with masking tape.
