A nineteenth century watercolor painting of high purple mountains looming above an arid landscape framed by two trees at right, unsigned, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" plus 3/4" wide framing. Found in California, and I lean towards this being a view in that state, though it could be elsewhere in the West or even conceivably in a place like Italy. The houses at far left do not help to solve the riddle. The piece, glued to the backing board, is definitely quite old. There is foxing throughout the sky, and some darker spots at lower left, and an old water drip near the summit of the mountain. Despite the condition, this is a genuine antique watercolor and it will work nicely on a small wall.
