A quality painting, canvas laid on canvasboard, unsigned, circa early 20th century, probably by an American artist, but of exotic architecture, likely in Mediterranean Europe, or Latin America; the light suggests a sun-drenched part of the world. The work measures 18" by 14" (23 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed). No doubt the artist is known and listed, but there is no signature nor other hint as to authorship. The previous owner told me he acquired this as-is, unstretched, and with some losses present. He decided to lay it down (pasted down) to a new board to preserve it. He stated that he observed no writing on the reverse of the canvas. The paint loss is in the central tower area, below the cross; also there are some brown areas that are in fact losses, elsewhere, and the darker blue, top part of the sky is possibly overpaint, I believe. The flaws hide well in the composition. As-is, the painting is quite decorative and stands on its own merits. A gold frame would enhance it.
