For the connoisseur of 17th century Dutch landscape painting, this is actually a contemporary work on panel, by Southern California artist WILLIAM GALVEZ of Placentia. The technique, featuring fine detail and a smooth glazed surface, and the handling of the subject matter, including silhouetted tree, last light of day effects, humble abode, and tiny figures and animals, belie the artist's familiarity with the Dutch Old Masters of previous centuries. The painting measures 11" by 14" (15 1/4" by 18 1/2" framed). Galvez was born in Cali, Colombia and received art education there and in California from the 1960's through the 1980's. The artist has had solo exhibitions of his work in California and Colombia since the 1970's. Today he has an impressive website, giving the story of his interesting life and his impressive achievements in fine art. The website includes fascinating personal details, including photos of his beloved parents and favorite dearly-departed pet dogs. The artist, now living in Placentia in Orange County, prices current paintings on the website to over $5,000. His more recent works are hyper realistic still life paintings. This example is signed at lower left and bears a stamp of the artist including name, address, Reproduction Rights Reserved etc. on the reverse of the panel.
