This is an antique painting of a traditional Russian Orthodox church in a verdant landscape, a lone figure at left center adding a human presence. The oil on canvas, 8" by 10" (13" by 15 1/4" in circa 1960's gold frame with linen liner) is signed in the paint at lower left corner (and actually somewhat wrapping around the edge, the first name initial seen there---with some adjacent losses) N VLASENKOV. Surprisingly research has not revealed an obvious listed artist name that would correspond to the work. The age seems to be circa second half of the 19th century, 1850 to 1900, the canvas old; it has been simply wrapped around a pine panel (stapled at edges). There is little varnish and the surface is dull. According to a professional restorer to whom I brought this for evaluation, a very careful test cleaning of a tiny patch indicated the paint might not be entirely oil. Further research should reveal more on the artist, possibly a Nikolai Vlasenkov.
