Watercolor painting drawing from Italian Renaissance and Spanish Colonial art, the subject the black Madonna holding a black Christ child, 27 1/2" by 18 1/2", placed possibly by the artist into antique early 20th century frame (31 3/4 by 22 1/2"), and with business card affixed to reverse from a prominent figure in L.A. African-American community, artist Mamie Hansberry (b. 1923), sister of famed black playwright Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), the author of "A Raisin in the Sun". Hansberry, a 1947 graduate of Howard University, studied under Lois Mailou Jones. The title at bottom is "REGINA POLONIAE REGINA"; at lower right, on a small rectangle of paper placed there by the artist, is written "POLISH PATRON SAINT "THE BLACK MADONNA", followed by artist's signature and date 1997. There is a lot of information on the internet about Mamie Hansberry. An exhibit of her work, "Underground Railroad", was held in recent years in Long Beach, CA and the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum in Culver City, California has exhibited her work. A most interesting and unusual piece, in excellent condition. Allow for reflections in glass.
