A scarce ORIGINAL WORK, pastel on paper, NOT A PRINT OR REPRODUCTION AS IS USUALLY ENCOUNTERED, the sheet 19 1/2" by 12 1/2", signed at lower right by listed Denmark-born artist GERDA CHRISTOFFERSEN (1917-2012), known for her "papoose art" renderings of North American Indians, whether in Canada or the United States. Christoffersen studied the culture of North American Indians and became known for her drawings, which were sold at mid-century in gift shops and other venues in the West. The drawings were very widely reproduced via various processes, (sometimes said to be on "velour") and many of the reproductions are difficult for the layman to distinguish from the much scarcer original hand-executed works. This piece was found with the glass broken and the photos were taken without glass, the work just set in the frame. As the delicate pastel is unusually heavy and dusty, and very easily smeared (there is some evidence of this on the drawing, especially at the very top, but a little bit elsewhere), it will be shipped out of the frame with glassine, between boards. There is some rumpling of the paper, there are three puncture holes at bottom from old nails (will be easily hidden by a new mat), and a barely noticeable hairline in the general area of the signature where the glass had broken. This needs to be properly re-framed, with a mat, to provide some all-important space between glass and the artwork's surface.
