This is a large and impressively painted (28 1/4" by 47" just the painting alone) oil on canvas signed at lower left "J. Mathey 21", showing an early autumn landscape with patches of snow and forest depicted in an impressionist manner. The artist, JACQUES MATHEY (1883-1973), was the son of French artist Paul Mathey (1844-1929). A highly underrated impressionist painter, the younger Mathey painted nudes, interiors, and landscapes, many in the South of France, and Spain, but also in North Africa including Morocco, a number of Orientalist works by his hand being known. At some point he also painted in Dieppe in northern France and also apparently in the Netherlands. This impressive painting stands on its own merits; the handling of the foreground shadow against the background light is masterful. The painting has some dryness in the upper right sky, and it should be cleaned and varnished. Also, there is a roughly 7" scrape of paint that at first looks like just a whiter patch of snow. It's not a tear through the canvas but the paint is missing. Email to discuss shipping options or to receive further images.
