A botanical painting of geranium flowers and leaves, by Northern California listed artist EDITH BRUNING (1899-1961), the work executed in the unusual oil on paper medium. The artist's technique lends a unique three dimensionality to the leaves and flower. Measuring 11" by 8" inside the present mat, and 19" by 15" in worn, simple framing, the painting is in very good condition despite having traveled without glass. The artist signed it in ink (faint) at lower right, and on the reverse paper, her name is written again. Bruning was born in Oroville, north of Sacramento, and educated at Chico State University. Later in life she lived in Santa Rosa, painting many of her botanical studies in the nearby Valley of the Moon. Her works were exhibited at Worden Gallery and at the San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939.
