A fine watercolor titled on reverse "Orange Milkweed, Miller, Ind.", 5 5/8" by 8" inside the mat (no glass), 11 1/2" by 14 1/2" in worn simple wood strip frame, signed at lower right and dated '41 by American artist LESTER J. CHANEY (1907-1998). This is a scene of the famous Indiana dunes, a popular subject for Midwestern artists of the period, and much sought after today by collectors. Chaney was born in Hungary. A student of Charles Woodbury and Leon Lundmark, painters of landscape and seascape, he was already actively exhibiting in the Chicago area in the 1930's and 1940's. Chaney painted around Lake Michigan's shores, and, also, in the state of Maine. This example is in fresh condition. You might want to re-frame for best effect.
