Oil on tin sheet painting of a man in cowboy hat, titled on reverse backing "The Old Hat", 16" by 12" (22 1/2" by 18 3/4" framed), signed at lower right and again on the backing, by the well known artist of the American Southwest, RAMON KELLEY (born 1939). This is a sensitively painted work of a subject obviously very familiar to the artist. Kelley studied on a scholarship at the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, where he counted the artist Charlie Dye among his instructors. A Taos, New Mexico gallery took on his work and a career in fine art was launched. Kelley counts Nicolai Fechin as one of the great influences on his work. The artist has written several books on art, and has appeared numerous times in publications featuring art of the Southwest. Kelley's works appear often at auctions. He was a founding member of the Pastel Society of America; his skill in that medium is not to be questioned. This example, painted on the unusual tin plate surface that enhances the artist's creative power in allowing for especially unfettered movement of paint, is in excellent condition. The wood frame has a few areas that could stand to be touched up.
