This is a typical work of the English turn of the century painter ROBERT ROBIN FENSON (active 1889 to 1914), who is known for his traditional landscapes of the English countryside, often featuring cottages and small figures. The measurements including frame are 13 1/2" by 19 1/2". Signed at lower left and dated there 1912, the scene is a comforting one: the sun is setting at right over fields, a cottage, and a small lake or pond which is traversed at left by an arched stone bridge on which walks a young woman who is herding geese. A luminous twilight is beautifully captured by the artist. There is old "alligatoring" craquelure in the sky, which is less obvious when viewed at normal viewing distance, and the canvas is depressed along the stretcher bar there. Overall a highly decorative traditional painting.
