An appealing circa 1890's oil on gray board painting of several boats with sail, off the rocky coast with waves, likely the Maine coastline, apparently unsigned (a slightly rubbed lower left corner might have held a signature) but almost certainly by the hand of the prolific Portland artist D.A. FISHER (1867-1940). The work shows a fine hand and nice detail and light effects. The frame is old and has significant losses so though likely the original, it should probably be replaced with a nice bright gold frame. Fisher was an employee of the Cumberland County Light and Power Company. He was a member of The Brushians, a Portland area group of artists. Fisher's paintings are often encountered in New England, and he spent some time in California as well, with some California landscape scenes known. Condition of the painting itself is excellent. It measures 9 1/2" by 12" and 16" by 18" framed.
