Beautiful hard carved (probably red or yellow cedar wood) wall hanging, titled on reverse "Killer Whale", by the noted Coast Salish First Nations artist Fred (Fredrick) Baker, born 1956. The piece measures 21 1/2" in height by 10 1/2" in width. Baker was born in Squamish, British Columbia, near the present ski town of Whistler, outside of Vancouver. He started carving at age 14, inspired by his father, noted Salish carver Red Baker Sr., and Floyd Joseph. This contemporary work is in the finest tradition of Northwest Coast carving. Note the very smooth surfaces, and the fine application of paint. The work is in excellent condition.
