A PAIR of oil on canvas laid on board paintings, each 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" and 13 1/4" by 15 3/4" in identical gold original framing, each signed by artist in red "L Muller". The works likely date to about 1880. The artist is likely German but could be Belgian. There are no obvious listed artist names that would correspond to the work. They are very traditional European works of the time, with a sympathetic portrayal of the rooster surrounded by his hens, and the ducklings at play as their parents watch over them very carefully. Both paintings exhibit spidery cracks throughout, but the paint is stable, with the exception of a small vertical strip in the ducks work. In any event, that craquelure is actually mostly visible only when the paintings are viewed at an angle. The antique frames show evidence of the gesso having broken off in chunks, which were then re-attached with glue, so the frames appear intact and original when viewed from normal viewing distance; and there are a few other small losses. An excellent choice for the traditional interior in need of some pastoral European antique artworks.
