An original solid copper engraving plate from which botanical prints were made, circa 18th or 19th century, no signature visible. The plate itself measures 8 7/8" by 6 7/8" and has been set quite some time ago into a black-painted wooden plank. The design features an iris at left and other species that I cannot immediately identify. The design is obviously cut by a talented artist, and the original prints from this plate must have been beautiful. Purchase this and perhaps make your own "reprints"----a few centuries having passed, any old copyrights should not cause any loss of sleep! There is no signature. The plate shows evidence of its age-----chemical oxidation process, some burnishing, some hardened, clear goopy substance at top left portion that might have been applied at one time to try to protect this under a clear layer.
