A very old map of the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean, inside the mat opening size 4 1/4" by 4 3/8", (10" by 10 1/2" framed, not opened up to see if laid down), acquired recently from the liquidation of the Beverly Hills estate of Charlton Heston and his wife Lydia. This piece was hanging in his movie viewing room, with some other later maps. Some of the others, like this one, bear labels from the prestigious Argosy book shop in New York City. This one has their label and someone wrote "Jamaica 1503" on the backing. The map is actually a FRAGMENT of a larger 1619 map by Mercator and Hondius, that map originally having been a composite of the large islands of the West Indies. Nevertheless, this appears most attractive and interesting as it stands on its own. Hand colored and those subdued colors lend a patina of age.
