Old Master woodblock print of the Madonna and Child, after Albrecht Durer, 4" by 3 1/8" (16" by 12 1/2" framed), with the conjoined initials CVS (CHRISTOFFEL VAN SICHEM, 1546-1624) appearing in the image at lower left. Van Sichem was a Dutch Golden Age woodcutter and engraver. A student of Henrik Goltzius, he often copied famous graphic artists of the time, including Bloemaert and van Heemskerck. Scholars have apparently confused his works with those of his son (also) Christoffel (1581-1658) as their signature and technique was much the same; modern day auction houses have no doubt also confused the two artists' works. This example is very clean. It has small clear margins and appears to be affixed at top to a silk backing (not examined out of frame).
