**ONE OF THREE ORIGINAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Gouache on thin board, 16" by 14", unframed, the subject a young girl wearing a flower-bedecked hat, signed at lower right by the listed California and Illinois artist MARGO ALEXANDER (1894-1965). This is a whimsical and very feminine subject that would be a fine addition to a lady's dressing area perhaps. The artist studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Subject matter is often whimsical, such as young children in colorful costumes. Prints of her work are commonly encountered, but originals are somewhat more scarce. This example has seen some abuse. Most notably the extreme lower right corner is broken off, though the signature remains intact---despite a crack through it. The extreme lower left corner is weakened and brittle and could break without a lot of pressure. These faults notwithstanding, the work could be easily framed, which would hide all edge faults, though the crack through the signature would remain. See the other works by Margo Alexander in my shop. The artist's handiwork is quite distinctive and identifiable at a distance. This work probably dates to the 1940's.
