By the recently deceased celebrated modern English artist ALFRED DANIELS (1924-2015) this is a 25" by 30" oil on canvas, unframed, titled on an original label of the artist "Going to Church/Hvar--Yugoslavia", signed at lower right and dated 1961. The scene is a church situated on a small rise by the sea, its blindingly white tower and red tile roof contrasting with a violet sky, and the dark green trees of the Adriatic coast. Hvar is part of present-day Croatia, on an island in the Adriatic not far from Split, and north of Dubrovnik. At lower left quadrant, Daniel's typical stylized modern figures walk towards the place of worship. Daniels painted somewhat whimsical genre scenes and landscapes, with a distinctive modern hand. His work has been compared to the great naive British artist L. S. Lowry; some have called Daniels "the Lowry for Londoners" or "the Lowry of the East End". Most of the artist's subject matter is British, though some scenes of the Holy Land and elsewhere are known. Daniels' 2015 death at age 90 has prompted a spate of obituaries summarizing his significant contribution to Modern British Art. Some paintings have approached $10,000 at auctions in England. The painting recently came from a Los Angeles estate. It will require some restoration to repair four sharp razor-slash-like cuts, each about 2 1/2" in length. Three of them are lost in the busy palette knife handling of the sky, and they require some effort to find. The fourth, most visible one, a more common type of puncture, is at the base of the church tower. The slashes are likely easily repaired, as it appears almost as if they were made by a very sharp X-Acto type knife. When the painting is viewed at a raking angle, one can see bullseye-shaped craquelure emanating from several of the slash areas. The reverse shows some past exposure to moisture, though the paint's stability does not seem to have been affected by this. Along the very bottom edge there is some paint loss likely from frame abrasion. The issues are well within the capabilities of any competent professional restorer.
