An original photograph of gauchos (Aregentine cowboys) on their horses, wading through a river, by the noted Argentine photographer PEDRO LUIS RAOTA (1934-1996), signed by him in marker at lower right. The work measures 17 1/4" by 12 3/4" (24" by 20" in metal frame). The paper has an unusual texture, seen best in the photos of the signature area. Raota has been called the "Ansel Adams of Argentina" for his excellent work in black and white photography, often featuring strong contrasts between light and dark. He was born in Argentina and showed intense interest in photography at an early age. Raota self-promoted, and by 1967 had won second prize at a major photography exposition in Cannes, France. From that time on, his fame grew internationally. See the net to view a number of his fascinating, dramatic, sensitive photographs. This example is in excellent, fresh, clean condition. I note a slight roll to the paper. The work was acquired from a sale held recently at the Beverly Hills estate of actor Charlton Heston and his accomplished photographer wife, Lydia Clark Heston. It was hanging in the home, alongside a number of artistic photographs by major figures in the medium. Allow for reflections and shadows on the right hand portion of some of the images. Photographing this while framed proved to be challenging.
