Large oil on canvas of a street in a French city or town, small figures in the composition going about their business. The work measures 24" by 36" (29 1/2" by 41 1/2" in pleasing vintage gold frame), and is signed at the lower right by the well known contemporary French artist CHARLES LEVIER (1920-2004). The selective use of color in a generally monochromatic scene makes for a rather elegant painting. The spiky black outlining is reminiscent of the master Bernard Buffet, yet Levier's style is all his own. He painted landscapes, harbors, and still life works, as well as mid 20th century female figures. Though born on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica, late in life he spent time in New York and California. See the net for much more information on this popular contemporary artist. Levier was quite prolific and his works are widely distributed around the world, but despite the volume of work, demand for the late artist's paintings remains steady at auctions in Europe and America. This particular example just came from a private home in a suburb of Los Angeles. It is in exceptionally clean and bright condition. A fine addition to a Mid Century interior.
