Oil on wood panel, 24" by 19 1/2" (61 cm. by 50 cm.), unframed, signed at lower right "E. Frey", a well listed French artist with a number of auction records. The work is undated, though titled on an original 1934 exhibition label on reverse "Le Rocher Fleuri a Monaco". This is a beautifully painted Mediterranean landscape with the golden light one expects to find in that region. The old retaining wall seems barely able to hold in the vegetation straining to escape it. Cacti, agave and flowering vines fill the foreground, a pine the middle, and a distant view to coastal buildings the left distance. The painting has probably never been cleaned. The surface is dulled by moderate old grime. Properly cleaned/varnished and framed, this painting will really come together. Other than the soiling, the only imperfections are a narrow 1/2" paint loss in tree and very light craquelure in the dried wood panel. The painting would predate the label of course so we can estimate late 1920's or early 1930's. The exhibition was at Asnieres, a close-in northwestern inner suburb of Paris on the Seine River.
