Oil on canvas of a large ship with four main masts, perhaps a barkentine, flying the Danish red and white flag at the stern, signed at lower left by artist H J ENGMANN. The work measures 18" by 26" and 22 1/2" by 31" framed. Satisfying at normal viewing distance as a work of marine art, up close the painting shows some issues of condition. There is a pencil eraser sized small hole in the sky, and especially at left 1/3 of the composition, there is considerable craquelure and a soiled look, evidently the result of past moisture exposure (the reverse tells the story of that moisture history). The "issues" add to the antiquity of the piece in a way as there is an impression of wear; a viewer knows immediately that this is not a brand new work for sure. I believe a simple patch repair of the small hole would be desirable, but would not recommended any work on the other issues. There is an auction record of a painting of sailing ships by the artist but truly not any biographical information that I can locate at this time.
