Oil on canvas portrait of a Victorian woman, 27 1/2" by 22", unframed, and unsigned, and another framed painting of a blondish child, obviously by the same hand, from likely the same family. The artist was born in East Zorra, Ontario in 1862 and died in 1922 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are no auction records that I can see, and biographical information seems to be concentrated in the ancestry website. Apparently the artist was a skilled portraitist. This work came from the granddaughter, who said that Hatch rarely signed his paintings. Originally there were three paintings together, all with the same red background; unfortunately, the portrait of a man, about the age of the lady, became separated from the other two, though I have retained a photo of it and would be happy to share it with the buyer of these two, so as to "keep the family together", so to speak. The child seems a bit young to be the offspring of the woman, leading one to speculate as to whether we might be looking at a grandchild. Condition is good, with no tears; there's just a little unevenness to the canvases, and the varnish is a bit heavier than optimal.
