Beautiful impressionist pastel drawing of a landscape in California's high desert outside Los Angeles, 12 1/2" by 19", 19 1/2 by 26 1/2" in attractive old gold strip framing (but with no glass), and signed "R W" and dated 1940 at lower right corner. The artist was surely a talent but I am unable to connect the initials to a known artist. Strangely, the work was found "high and dry" in Asbury Park, New Jersey---and evidently the work also spent some time in Chicago on its way east, having been framed there! There is slight rubbing of the pastel in a few spots but remarkably the work has survived in great condition considering its travel without glass. Old torn mat is acidic and needs to be replaced. The Joshua Tree lives in a narrow band of empty, arid land above about 3,000 feet elevation in portions of Southern California.
