GIOVANNI PANZA (1894-1989) painting of 18th century salon scene "The Reception" by frequently auctioned Italian artist
Oil on canvas painting of an 18th century salon with numerous figures and all the elegant trappings of the age, 24" by 30" (29 1/4" by 35 1/4" nicely framed), signed at lower left corner and inscribed and signed again on the stretcher in pencil by Italian 20th century artist GIOVANNI PANZA (1894-1989). The work is beautifully painted by an artist obviously familiar with the paintings of earlier centuries. Born into an artistic family, he painted in the course of a long life many works dealing with a wide variety of subjects, including interiors, landscape, genre, and particularly, scenes of the Naples area of which he was a native. This painting is in excellent condition, having come from the recent liquidation of the contents of a Southern California antique shop that had been closed for years. Panza's paintings have auctioned in Italy to nearly $10,000, and it appears that his scenes of figures in these elegant settings of earlier times are particularly appealing to art buyers. Condition is excellent. The painting was likely executed circa 1960's or thereabouts.
