One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is a print in grays, black and white with some subtle browns, tans and green, on silk, 13" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 19" by 17 1/2" in silvery gray frame, pencil signed at lower right margin by the noted Austrian artist HANS FIGURA (1898-1978). Figura is known for his aquatints on paper and silk, featuring scenes of the Tyrolean Alps, Venice, other European locales, and even New York and elsewhere in the United States, as, in this case, Philadelphia. He was prolific. The inscrutable signature has I believe hindered his receiving wider recognition for his quality work. This example is in good presentable condition, despite having traveled obviously for some time without glass. The work appears to be laid down and the overmat is fixed. There is a two inch shallow scuff in the silk at upper left extending into the margin, and maybe an old corner crease there. This is barely noticeable to the casual observer. The frame has slight wear, including a very short stretch of missing beading and at right center a bit of gold loss. Overall a nice collectable image of Independence Hall.
