By noted California modernist artist ADELE WATSON (1873-1947), this is a mixed media work on paper laid on board, 20" by 15 1/8", unframed, signed at lower right by the artist. The scene is one of the iconic sights of Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, a mountain known as The Great Throne. Watson was born in Toledo, Ohio and studied art in New York City and in Paris. By 1917 she was in Pasadena in Los Angeles County, becoming an active participant in the art scene. She painted landscapes, coast, and nudes. Many works featuring mountains (but not this one) contain hidden anthropomorphic figures in the rock patterns. John Abraham, a Los Angeles area art dealer, acquired a large group of the artist's works. He wrote on the reverse her name and the provenance from this group he acquired. The board on which this work has been laid has become warped with age and exposure to a dry climate. Most likely a professional restorer could reduce the warp. Otherwise there is some generalized age soiling (some areas around the edge are cleaner; likely they were hidden at one point by a frame) and softly worn corners.
